Mountain biker Špela Horvat has experienced snow cycling at several races in the past. “It takes some getting used to, as snow reacts differently to mud or sand, but in general it’s a great experience,” she said, describing it as something that any serious mountain biker should try at least once. Horvat swears by a combination of fresh and compacted snow. When it comes to compacted snow, Jure Culiberg said that the grip is similar to a dry mountain trail in the summer, if you are using the same tyres. And if you should happen to fall, you will land on softer ground than in the summer. If there is more snow, various obstacles and jumps can be built to make snow cycling even more appealing.
With its Winter Bike Park, Kranjska Gora is developing into a biker-friendly destination all year round. The Bike Park is extremely popular in the summer season, particularly with Italians. “Some ride over from Tarvisio on a downhill bike, enjoy a full day of fun here and ride back home with a smile, which means that they’ve found what they were looking for in the park,” says Culiberg. Word of the park has even spread across the Atlantic. “We’ve had a visit from some Americans who were staying at the Aviano Air Base and had heard of our park. They spent over two hours driving to Kranjska Gora just to try the Bike Park.”
Families come too and, according to Culiberg, children tend to be braver than their parents. Adrenaline-filled cycling is often included in seminars and team building events. Jure Culiberg remembers two participants in a Kosovo bankers’ seminar who had had very little experience with mountain bikes. “The woman was dressed not so much for cycling as for sitting in a café. But they insisted on trying their hand at cycling anyway, and by the evening they were so impressed that they returned for another go the following day.”
If you are not the type for downhill biking, there is always the cycle track through the Upper Sava valley, which is at its best during the summer months. So don’t forget to bring your bike to Kranjska Gora – whatever the season.
