The people of Carniola have been renowned as very good beekeepers. The struggle for survival was even greater in harsh conditions of the mountain world. For this reason, beekeping has developed so well in this area. The Carniolian art of beekeping has achieved world-wide fame due to Anton Janša who became the first beekeping teacher in the Imperial Court in Vienna in the age of enlightenment. He was the first to write more extensively about beekeeping and the Carniolan honey bee and is regarded as the pioneer of modern beekeeping.
