Kekec and his friends, timid Rožle and the little blind girl, Mojca, herd their animals in the mountains and find adventures along the way. They usually get into trouble with the poacher, Bedanec, and wild Aunt Pehta, but sly and resourceful Kekec always finds a way through it. Aunt Pehta describes Kekec as “terribly mischievous boy”. Once when she captured him Kekec was not afraid of her at all. “He told me, ‘Why should I be afraid of you? You are just an old woman,’ ” says Aunt Pehta.
The children of the Kranjska Gora kindergarten group ‘Kekci’ tell how Kekec teases the terrifying Bedanec. “Kekec imitates an owl and Bedanec gets scared and runs away because he thinks that owls bring death. But we are not afraid of them,” say the Kekci children, and add with a sparkle, “Bedanc is clueless. He is a real scaredy-cat.”
The other main characters of the Vandot stories are a girl named Tinkara, the good old man Kosobrin, remembered by children mainly for his ‘drawbridge’, and wise Vitranc.
Although Kekec and his friends can be found anywhere in Kranjska Gora, Vandot’s characters especially come to life at the beginning of the summer holidays. At this time the traditional Kekec Days take place and are an attraction for the whole family.
This is a week of events and activities when children and their parents can enjoy sports, visit one of the fairytale lands in the area and take part in creative workshops. Sometimes they also do some excellent cooking. Kekec’s motto is “Always be of good cheer!” and so the event includes a lot of dancing, music and theatre performances.
