According to folk legend, once upon a time you were likely to encounter a dragon while hiking in the mountains surrounding the city of Tržič. Today, however, on many mountain routes you are more likely to run into a mountain biker, seeking to either boost their adrenalin levels or merely relax in the outdoors. The abundance of routes zigzagging the slopes around Tržič will satisfy both those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the valley and those in constant search of new adventures.

If you are looking for where to take your bike in the Tržič area, you are faced with a vast range of choices. If you want to do something good for your body while enjoying the views, you might want to choose the route which follows Košuta, the longest Slovenian mountain, where, as the legend goes, a dragon lies sleeping – the very one “credited” with the birth of the city of Tržič. Along this route, you can experience the picturesque Dovžan Gorge and recharge your batteries with a hearty meal in any of the mountain huts – from “masovnek” (a shepherd’s dish made of sour cream, eggs and flour) at Koča na Dolgi njivi, to delicious “štruklji” (a type of dumpling) at Dom na Kofcah.

One of the “bikers on the mountain”, i.e. those who enjoy the adventure of reaching a peak, is local Anže Štucin. He says he likes to escape to the solitude of the mountains and enjoy the natural environment. “My favourite destination is the Lom Valley because of its amazing viewpoints”, he says. “When you get there in the calm of the morning or at night, you come across wild deer. I find this a very special experience”.

Those that are drawn to mountain biking mainly because of the challenges offered by the mountains will find the route around the mountain of Begunjščica interesting. At the very beginning of this route, bikers are faced with a steep ascent from the village of Podljubelj to Preval. On this section there used to be a mercury mine called Šentanski rudnik. The most demanding part is the ascent to Zelenica, the highest point of the route, where bikers really feel they have arrived in the very heart of the mountains.

Andrej Remškar, another native of Tržič devoted to biking in the surrounding mountains, thinks one of the highlights of Tržič mountain bike routes is a good balance of ascents and descents. He himself prefers descents, preferably in the company of his friends. “It is not about a competition to see who gets to the valley first. It’s more about being able to overcome some technically more challenging sections where you used to have to get off your bike”.

Whether you prefer biking up or downhill, want to test your abilities or simply enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes, whether you opt for short routes or choose to continue across the border – the Tržič area is always a good choice.
